About Liposuction
Liposuction is designed to contour and sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat. As people age, their metabolism can change, leaving stubborn, diet- and exercise-resistant fat that can affect both one’s figure and self-esteem. This treatment is effective in contouring multiple parts of the body and is considered one of the most effective body sculpting treatments, permanently removing targeted fat cells from the body.
Benefits of Liposuction
There are several unique benefits of liposuction. This procedure offers permanent fat removal, allowing patients to enjoy a slimmer figure and more balanced body proportions, improving their confidence and self-esteem. This treatment is fully customizable, with each aspect being tailored to provide stunning results for each individual. Modern advancements and techniques have made liposuction more efficient and effective than ever before, and the procedure only requires small, discreetly placed incisions.
Candidates
The ideal candidates for liposuction are those who are experiencing stubborn, exercise-resistant deposits of fat. Patients should be at or near their ideal stable body weight and within 30% of a healthy body mass index. (3) Ideal candidates have firmer, healthier skin that can retract after fat removal. All candidates interested in liposuction should be in good overall health and free of any underlying medical conditions that may impair the healing process. Having realistic expectations is also important–although liposuction can contour your figure, it is not a weight loss treatment.
If applicable, patients who smoke should be prepared to refrain from nicotine and tobacco at least a month before their procedure and continue to abstain throughout the recovery period.

Preparation
Before each liposuction treatment, Dr. Demaree will prepare a set of preparation instructions for each patient at their complimentary consultation. This is to ensure that each patient is properly informed on how to best prepare their body and space for their treatment.
Patients preparing for liposuction should schedule time away from work, as well as any other social commitments. Many patients also find it helpful to arrange assistance for the first 24-48 hours following their procedure. Dr. Demaree may ask patients to temporarily refrain from using certain medications or supplements that may thin the blood. These may include substances such as fish oil, vitamin E, or ibuprofen. Patients who smoke should cease the use of nicotine and tobacco at least 4 weeks before their appointment. (3)
Liposuction Procedure
The procedure begins with the administration of anesthesia to ensure that each patient feels as comfortable as possible. Dr. Demaree will then inject a tumescent solution into the treatment area; this fluid contains epinephrine, saline, and lidocaine. Epinephrine is used to help minimize bleeding, lidocaine helps further numb the treatment area for patient comfort, and the saline helps swell the fat. Injecting the treatment area with the solution helps make the fat cells easier to remove. (4)
Dr. Demaree will create a small incision in the treatment area. He will then insert a specialized piece of equipment called a cannula, which uses gentle mechanisms to liquefy and suction the fat cells from the body. Liposuction removes excess, unwanted fat while preserving the surrounding tissues. The duration of this procedure can vary depending on the placement and size of the treatment area. Many liposuction procedures fall into the range of 1-3 hours.
Recovery
Following a liposuction procedure, it is normal to experience soreness, similar to that of a muscle ache, and bruising at the treatment site. You can alleviate any pain or discomfort with medication. Patients are encouraged to wear a compression garment for a few weeks following their treatment to preserve their new contour and let their bodies heal. Patients are encouraged to go on light walks throughout their recovery, but should refrain from any physical activities until fully healed. Most patients can return to work after a few days, but this can vary. Patients with more physically intensive careers may need to wait until approved by Dr. Demaree.
Results
Once the residual swelling subsides, patients will be able to enjoy their new contours. The full effects of the procedure will be visible between 3-6 months following the procedure, leaving patients with a more sculpted figure.
The results of liposuction are long-lasting with proper lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy diet and regularly exercising. Once the fat cells are removed from the body, they are unable to return. However, significant weight fluctuations may impact the appearance of your results.

FAQ
Is liposuction safe?
Yes, liposuction is considered safe when performed by a qualified board-certified cosmetic surgeon. As with any surgical procedure, potential risks exist but can be minimized through compliance with pre-operative and post-operative care.
How long do the results of liposuction last?
Results can be long-lasting, provided patients maintain a healthy lifestyle with proper diet and exercise after their procedure. After a liposuction procedure, the removed fat cells cannot grow back. However, significant weight fluctuations can affect the results of the procedure, as surrounding fat cells can swell in size.
Will liposuction remove cellulite or stretch marks?
Liposuction specifically targets fat and does not eliminate stretch marks or cellulite. It may, however, potentially improve the appearance of cellulite. If you would like to address stretch marks, other surgical options, such as tummy tucks, can effectively reduce the appearance of this concern by removing the affected tissues. If you are primarily concerned with addressing issues such as cellulite or stretch marks, be sure to provide this information to your surgeon during your personal consultation.
What is the difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck?
While both procedures can improve body shape, liposuction focuses on fat removal, whereas a tummy tuck involves tightening muscles and removing excess skin. In many cases, these two procedures can be combined. If you are interested in addressing both stubborn fat deposits in the abdominal area and excess abdominal skin, your surgeon can first perform liposuction and then remove excess skin with a tummy tuck. Combining these procedures can provide stunning results.
Are there alternatives to liposuction?
Yes, there are non-surgical alternatives to liposuction. However, these alternatives may not yield the same dramatic results as liposuction. If you are interested in liposuction alternatives, you can discuss your options with a professional during your personal consultation.
