About Botox

Botox is derived from botulinum toxin, which works by temporarily relaxing the muscles in the area where it is injected. When these muscles are relaxed, they do not pull on the skin as much, and this leads to a reduction in wrinkles. The treatment is primarily used for areas such as the forehead, between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), and around the eyes (crow’s feet). (1)

The use of Botox has grown significantly since its approval by the FDA in 2002 for cosmetic purposes. More than 4 million Botox procedures are performed in the United States yearly, solidifying its reputation as an effective anti-aging solution.

People seek Botox treatments for various reasons, including the desire for a more youthful look, improved self-esteem, or simply wanting to prevent future wrinkles. The results are not permanent, and patients often find that repeat sessions provide the best long-term enhancement of facial aesthetics. (1)

Benefits

Botox offers patients an easy way to reduce wrinkles and enjoy a younger appearance. Through a personally customized injection, Premier Surgical Arts can potentially help patients experience benefits such as:

  • Non-surgical treatment: Botox is a minimally invasive procedure requiring no significant downtime.
  • Quick procedures: Most Botox injections take about 10 to 15 minutes, making it easy to fit into a busy schedule.
  • Minimal discomfort: The injection process is generally well-tolerated, and patients might feel only a small pinch.
  • Fast-acting results: Patients can see some improvements within just a few days after treatment, and fuller results continue to develop over time.
  • Long-lasting effects: While not permanent, results typically last for three to six months.
  • Preventative treatment: Patients benefit from using Botox as an anti-aging measure to prevent the formation of new or deeper wrinkles.

Candidates

Good candidates for Botox are those who are looking to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in various facial regions. Ideal candidates should:

  • Be in generally good health
  • Have realistic expectations about their results
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Not be pregnant or nursing

Individuals who suffer from certain neurological conditions or infections should discuss these concerns with Dr. Demaree or another provider during a consultation.

Personal Consultation

Scheduling a personal consultation with Dr. Demaree or one of the expert injection specialists at Premier Surgical Arts is essential to determine if Botox is right for you. During the consultation, we will evaluate your medical history and aesthetic goals. Your provider will assess the areas of concern and recommend whether Botox, another type of treatment, or a combination of approaches will yield the best results. This is also a great opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have about the procedure, including potential side effects and what to expect afterward. Most patients will receive their injections immediately after this initial consultation, so this first appointment will likely take slightly longer than your future Botox injection sessions.

Schedule your consultation appointment online today or call our Altoona office at (715) 575-5800.

Preparation

Because Botox is a minimally invasive treatment, there is little preparation required. However, patients should still follow a few key steps to optimize their results and minimize risks. Patients should hydrate sufficiently before their scheduled injection session and ensure that their face is clean and free of products, including any makeup. We generally recommend that patients avoid blood thinners, ibuprofen, and supplements that may increase bruising for at least a week before treatment. Alcohol should also be avoided for at least two days before receiving Botox.

Procedure

Botox Premier Surgical Arts Dr. Dax Demaree

The Botox injection procedure is simple. Once you are seated comfortably or lying on your back, your injection provider will clean and sterilize the skin on your injection site. They may apply a numbing cream to minimize discomfort, although this is not required. Your Botox injections will be carefully planned to target the areas you want to see improved. We will strategically inject small amounts of Botox into these targeted areas. The entire procedure usually lasts about 10 to 15 minutes, making it a convenient choice for busy individuals.

Botox works by blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contractions. Once injected into the targeted areas, Botox attaches to specific receptors on the surface of nerve cells. These cells’ membranes then wrap around the linked toxin and receptors, bringing the Botox inside the cells. (2) A special bond called a light chain is then formed between the Botox and the cell, which prevents the release of acetylcholine, which is necessary for muscle contractions. By keeping muscles in a semi-permanent relaxed state, wrinkles cannot form. (2) Patients can experience smoother skin within only a few days, while full results will develop over time.

After Treatment

One of the main advantages of Botox is that there is no extensive recovery time. After the procedure, patients can return to their normal activities almost immediately. Patients should avoid touching or rubbing the treated areas for several hours, refrain from strenuous exercise for 24 hours post-injection, and remain upright for at least four hours after treatment. Any side effects, such as minor redness or swelling at the injection sites, typically resolve quickly.

Results

Results from Botox typically begin to appear within two to three days, with full results visible in about two weeks. Patients will notice a softer, more youthful appearance as wrinkles and fine lines diminish. The effects can last approximately three to six months, after which patients can choose to receive additional treatments to maintain results.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Botox is commonly combined with other injectable treatments, such as the RHA® hyaluronic acid dermal filler. This injectable uses hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in our bodies, to add volume underneath the skin. Hyaluronic acid works by retaining water, and when injected into certain areas, this water retention leads to a rejuvenated appearance.

FAQ

Is Botox safe?

Botox is FDA-approved and has a proven safety record when administered by trained professionals.

How long do Botox results last?

Typically, results from Botox last between three to six months. After this period, patients may elect to undergo additional injections to prolong their results. When treatments are maintained, Botox can have long-lasting benefits for preventing new wrinkles from appearing or old wrinkles from worsening. Patient experiences may vary.

Can I go back to work after receiving Botox?

Most patients can return to work and their daily activities soon after their treatment session. Swelling, tenderness, or redness may occur in the treated areas, but these symptoms will likely subside on their own.

How many units of Botox will I need?

The number of units of Botox that will be effective for you varies based on the designated treatment area and your individual needs. We will provide you with information regarding the amount of Botox units necessary during your consultation.

What happens after Botox wears off?

After Botox treatment, the targeted muscles will be relaxed, and the associated wrinkles will be unable to form during facial movements. Once your Botox treatment wears off, the treated muscles will gradually regain their ability to contract. The wrinkles associated with these muscles will reappear over time. However, patients can choose to undergo maintenance treatments so that they can prolong their results and prevent wrinkles from reappearing or worsening.
