- Chronic neck, back, or shoulder pain
- Bra straps creating deep grooves
- Recurrent chafing and skin irritation
- Postural changes
- Difficulty exercising

Preparation
After scheduling your procedure, you will need to make certain preparations to ensure you are ready for your breast reduction. These include:
- Avoiding Certain Medications: Discontinue the use of any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning or antiplatelet properties.
- Arrange Transportation Home: Have a trusted friend or relative drive you home after your procedure, as you will not be able to transport yourself.
- Picking Up Medications: Fill any prescriptions you will need throughout your recovery so they are readily available when you need them.
- Requesting Time Away: Prepare to take a step back from your professional and personal responsibilities to give yourself time to heal.
- Abstaining From Substances: Refrain from consuming any alcohol or nicotine in the weeks leading up to your procedure, as both substances can lead to several complications.
Procedure
Dr. Demaree will perform your breast reduction at his surgical center on an outpatient basis. When you arrive for your appointment, he will meet with you one last time to reconfirm each detail of your treatment plan. He will then cleanse your skin before you receive general anesthesia.
If there is a significant amount of fatty tissue, Dr. Demaree will first perform liposuction to remove it. He will place a small incision before injecting the breasts with a tumescent solution to swell the fat cells for easier removal. He will then insert a thin cannula through these incisions to break down and suction out the fat. (2)
Dr. Demaree will then use one of two incision patterns to access the underlying layers of your breasts. These are the inverted-T incision and vertical incision.
- Inverted-T: The inverted-T incision builds off of the vertical incision but adds another incision that extends horizontally beneath the breast crease, or the inframammary fold.
- Vertical Incision: The vertical incision first circles the areola, then extends downward towards the breast crease.
Dr. Demaree will carefully remove excess tissue and fat from your breasts and reshape the mound. If necessary, he may also reposition or reshape your areolas to ensure they are proportionate to your new breasts.
Recovery
After your breast reduction, it is common to experience some swelling, bruising, or tenderness around your breasts. You may reduce these effects with prescription medications and plenty of rest, but they will also subside on their own as you continue to heal. Dr. Demaree will also give you a compression bra to wear, which will prevent further swelling and maintain your new breast shape as your tissues settle.
You will be able to return to most of your daily activities after a week or two, but you will need to refrain from any intense activities until Dr. Demaree clears you to return.
Dr. Demaree will provide you with a full set of recovery instructions before your procedure so you understand what to expect in advance. By following each one, you will be able to return to each of your daily activities safely, comfortably, and quickly.
Results
You will be able to enjoy the full results of your breast reduction after a full recovery. Your breasts will feel lighter and more manageable, and appear more balanced with your natural figure. You will also be able to experience improvements in your posture and mobility, allowing you to complete your daily routine more easily and comfortably.
The results of your breast reduction will be long-lasting, with effects that can last for several years to come. You should try to maintain a stable weight to preserve them, as weight fluctuations can lead to changes in breast size and shape.

FAQ
Who would benefit from a breast reduction?
Dr. Demaree may recommend breast reduction if you are interested in alleviating any physical pain or discomfort from heavy or enlarged breasts, or achieving a more balanced and proportionate appearance between your breasts and body.
Will I be able to breastfeed after my breast reduction?
Breast reduction can affect your ability to breastfeed. While some women may be able to continue breastfeeding, others may not, and it is hard to predict ahead of time what this outcome will be. For this reason, Dr. Demaree recommends either waiting to undergo a breast reduction until you are done having children or not breastfeeding.
How long will it take me to recover from my breast reduction?
Your recovery timeline will vary depending on your personal concerns and the extent of your procedure. You may be able to return to most of your daily activities after resting for approximately one to two weeks, but you must refrain from more strenuous tasks until Dr. Demaree approves your return.
How long will the results of a breast reduction last?
With a stable weight and healthy lifestyle, you will be able to enjoy the results of your procedure for several years to come.
Will my breast reduction address the placement of my nipples?
Dr. Demaree may reposition or reshape your nipples as part of your procedure if he is removing or resculpting a significant amount of breast tissue. During your personal consultation, he will discuss each of your options with you.
Will my breast reduction leave scars?
Breast reduction surgery does involve incisions, which means some degree of scarring is expected. Dr. Demaree uses advanced techniques to place incisions as discreetly as possible and provides detailed aftercare instructions to support optimal healing.
