Eyelid Lift

Conveniently located to serve the areas of Eau Claire and Wisconsin

An eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, is a facial procedure that can restore a more rejuvenated and youthful-looking appearance.

The eyelids have the thinnest skin in the body; they are more prone to showing the early signs of aging. (1) Eyelid skin can droop or sag, the underlying fat can push forward and cause puffiness, and peripheral vision can even be affected if the drooping is severe. Patients with these concerns often find they look chronically tired, no matter how much sleep they get. Through a blepharoplasty, you can achieve a more refreshed, alert look that is authentic to you.

Dr. Dax Demaree is a triple board-certified cosmetic surgeon at Premier Surgical Arts. Dr. Demaree is certified through the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery, and in general surgery by the American College of Osteopathic Surgery. His goal with blepharoplasty is to always create natural, balanced results that enhance the eyes without making them look overdone or pulled.

Preparation

Once you have scheduled your procedure, you may need to take certain steps to prepare. To help you, Dr. Demaree will provide you with a set of comprehensive pre-operative instructions. He may direct you to:

  • Adjust Certain Medications: You might need to avoid taking certain medications or supplements that thin the blood.
  • Arrange Transportation: Make sure someone you trust is available to transport you to and from your appointment.
  • Arrange Time Off: Schedule time off from work and away from other commitments that may cause strain as you recover. Typically, one to two weeks is adequate for light work and activities.
  • Fill Any Medications: Pick up any prescriptions or medications that you might need during recovery.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Refrain from consuming alcohol in the days before and after your procedure.
  • Stop Smoking: Cease any nicotine use in the weeks leading up to your procedure and continue to abstain while you recover.

Procedure

Dr. Demaree performs each procedure at his accredited surgical center. The length of this procedure varies depending on patients’ different needs, but you can expect yours to last somewhere between one and three hours. To ensure your comfort, you will receive the appropriate anesthesia.

Dr. Demaree can address the upper and lower eyelids together or separate the procedures depending on your goals.

Upper Eyelid Lift

For the upper eyelid lift, Dr. Demaree will make an incision that follows the natural crease of your upper eyelid. This makes it so that any post-operative scarring blends in with the natural crease fade and remains barely visible. He will remove and reposition the excess skin and fat in the area to open up the eyes and turn back the clock.

Lower Eyelid Lift

When addressing the lower eyelids, Dr. Demaree there are two different incision types that Dr. Demaree can use, depending on your facial anatomy. If you are primarily concerned about sagging under-eye skin, Dr. Demaree will likely place an incision along the lower lash line (transcutaneous approach) for effective skin and fat removal and repositioning.

If you have good skin elasticity and mainly want to address bulging fat, Dr. Demaree can use an internal incision within the lower eyelid (transconjunctival) to reposition and remove the fat as needed. With this method, there will be no external scarring, but it is more limited in what it can achieve.

Recovering from Eyelid Surgery

After a blepharoplasty, it is normal to experience some swelling, bruising, and tenderness around the eyes. These effects will subside on their own with time, but you may also manage them by gently using a cold compress, taking medications prescribed by Dr. Demaree as directed, staying hydrated, and getting adequate rest.

You will most likely be able to return to most of your daily activities after about one to two weeks. However, you will need to refrain from any strenuous or vigorous activities until Dr. Demaree approves.

Throughout your recovery, you will return to the office for follow-up visits, where he will monitor your healing progress and developing results.

Dr. Demaree will provide you with a full set of recovery instructions to help you navigate your recovery. By following each one, you can ensure a quick return to your routine and the best possible results.

Results

You will begin to notice the results of your blepharoplasty become increasingly apparent as you continue to heal. While your exact results will vary, you can expect to have a wider, more refreshed, and alert appearance to your upper and/or lower eyelids.

The results of blepharoplasty are designed to be long-lasting, with effects that you can enjoy for 5–10 years or longer. It is important to note that this procedure will not stop the natural effects of aging from progressing, but the procedure will essentially turn back the clock, helping you look more refreshed and youthful for years to come.

FAQ

Is there a difference between an upper and lower blepharoplasty?

An upper blepharoplasty addresses concerns found across the upper eyelid. These typically include drooping or hanging eyelid skin. On the other hand, lower blepharoplasty focuses on enhancing the lower eyelids by addressing concerns such as under-eye bags or puffiness.

Will receiving a blepharoplasty improve my vision?

Not directly. Blepharoplasty is typically considered an aesthetic procedure, not a vision-enhancing one. You may notice improvements in your peripheral vision if you are experiencing obstructions due to hanging eyelid skin, but it is not usually the main focus of this procedure.

How long will it take for me to recover after my blepharoplasty?

You will be able to resume most of your daily activities after resting for approximately one to two weeks. However, you will need to continue avoiding any strenuous activities until Dr. Demaree has approved.

How long will the results of a blepharoplasty last?

The results of a blepharoplasty typically last for about 5–10 years, but they may last for longer—especially when you stick to an effective skincare regimen and use sunscreen daily.

Can Dr. Demaree combine my blepharoplasty with another procedure?

Yes, Dr. Demaree can perform your blepharoplasty in conjunction with another procedure for further facial rejuvenation and more comprehensive results.
